Through the Survey of Small Business Finances (SSBF), the Federal Reserve Board collects information on small businesses (fewer than 500 employees) in the United States. Examples of the types of information collected include owner characteristics, firm size, use of financial services, and the income and balance sheets of the firm.

Full public datasets are available from the 2003, 1998, 1993, and 1987 SSBFs. For each dataset, there are methodology reports and papers, documentation for the codebook and survey questionnaire, and the survey data, which is contained in either an SAS data set or ASCII flat (rectangular) file.
